JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Saint Peter's rallied from a 16-point deficit to force overtime but Blue Hen guard Kevin Anderson scored all but two of UD's points in the extra session as Delaware pulled out a 78-75 victory Saturday night at the Yanitelli Center.
The Blue Hens (1-1) led 57-41 following a Jacob Cushing three-pointer at the 9:33 mark, but the Peacocks (1-1) rallied back and finally pulled even at 66-66 on a Davauhnte Turner free throw with 3.5 seconds to play. Anderson's last second desperation three-pointer was off the mark, forcing the extra session.
Anderson then scored the first four points of overtime, and the Blue Hens never trailed in the extra period. Anderson scored UD's first seven overtime points, before two free throws by Eric Carter made it a 77-73 game with 17 seconds left. After a Peacocks layup, Anderson hit one of two from the stripe to put the Blue Hens up three.
UD then fouled intentionally, and Saint Peter's guard KC Ndefo missed both free throws to seal the Blue Hen victory.
Anderson finished with a career-high 25 points, including a 9 of 11 effort from the foul line, and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Blue Hens. Carter added 18 points and eight boards, while Matt Veretto contributed 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Turner led Saint Peter's with 23 points and seven rebounds on the night.
The teams were knotted at 21-21 with eight minutes left in the first half, but Delaware exploded with a 13-0 run to take control. A fast break layup by Veretto made it a nine-point game and forced a Peacocks timeout, before Carter and Anderson each added two free throws to close the spurt.
Saint Peter's pulled within seven late in the period, but Veretto answered with a jumper and Carter drained a free throw to give the Blue Hens a 39-29 halftime lead.
UD went up as many as 16 points in the second half, before Saint Peter's answered with an 11-0 and drew even in the final seconds of regulation.
Head Coach Martin Ingelsby
"This win shows a lot of resiliency from our group. We've got a lot to learn from this game as well, we've got to do a better job of taking care of the basketball. Kevin Anderson did a great job in overtime, getting into a rhythm and scoring it for us, and Matt Veretto gave us a great effort off the bench. For this younger team obviously playing without Ryan Allen, it's great for us to be able to go on the road in a tough environment and come out of there with the win. It says a lot about our character to come out in overtime and really focus on both ends of the floor."
Game Notes:
• Anderson's previous career-high was a 23-point effort vs. Notre Dame last year
• Collin Goss finished with nine points, all in the first half on three 3-pointers
• The Blue Hens guarded the three-point line well for the second straight game, holding the Peacocks to 7 of 24 shooting from behind the arc
• Delaware has won its last five overtime games, including all four during Ingelsby's tenure
• The game was the first ever meeting between Delaware and Saint Peter's
• UD has opened the season with two straight road games for the fourth time in five years
