NEW YORK, N.Y. – As most college kids prep to head home for break, senior Carly Pettipaw and her University of Delaware track & field teammates were just ramping up the 2018-19 indoor season at the TCNJ Invitational at the historic NY Armory this past weekend.
Pettipaw led a great showing by the Blue Hens with a school-record breaking run in the 600m and was a part of the 4x400 relay that qualified for the ECACs. As a team, Delaware posted four wins and 15 top-three finishes at the meet.
"We had a great meet to start our indoor season. I was really happy with the fight and spirit our team showed," head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith said. "Everyone was looking forward to testing their fitness level in competition after some very good performances in training leading into this meet. Personal best performances and new school records this early in the season is a very good sign. We are excited for what is in store for the rest of the indoor and outdoor season."
Pettipaw led a strong showing in the 600m, setting a new school record with a time of 1:32.59, breaking her own school record from 2016 by over four seconds. Teammates Sydni Stovall (1:34.95) and Alyssa Armor (1:36.10) also came in under the old school record in the event as the Blue Hens went 1-2-3 in the event. Armor's time set a new freshman record in the 600m.
Stovall and Pettipaw also teamed with Nadia Khoury and Michaela Meyer to win the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:50.52, which was the first ECAC qualifying mark of the year for the Blue Hens.
Senior Bema Kyeadea-Amponsah started her final year with a bang, winning the 400m dash with a time of 1:01.63, beating out teammate Nalia Jackson, who finished in second (1:02.01).
Classmate Jeannette Bendolph was the fourth Blue Hen with a victory at the meet, clocking in at a personal best 5:01.81 in the mile, which is the 10thbest time in school history. Bendolph led a Blue Hens in the top six in the event.
Sophomore Taliah Cintron had two top-six finishes, clocking in with a personal best in the 60m en route to a sixth-place finish, then followed it up with a third-place finish in the 300m dash. Cintron was one of four Blue Hens to finish in the top-five of the 300m, along with Halima Scott (second – 40.07), Roshelle Leaks (fourth – 41.10) and Andriene Rose (fifth – 42.22).
Delaware will have the rest of the month off, before the indoor season rolls back out in January, beginning with a Jan. 12thtrip to the Great Dane Classic at the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
