STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The University of Delaware track & field team wasted no time hitting the ground running in 2019.
In their first indoor meet in six weeks, the Blue Hens hit three ECAC qualifying marks and had five top-10 performances in program history at the Great Dane Classic, hosted at the Ocean Breeze Athletics Complex on Saturday.
"I'm really happy with the performance this week, it was a great way to start 2019 for our team," head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith said. "I thought we were really connected and pushed each other throughout the meet. We're all excited for the next few weeks as we train and continue to get better and better."
The highlight of the weekend happened late in the afternoon when the 4x800 meter team of senior Carly Pettipaw, junior Michaela Meyer and sophomores Jessica Harding and Sydni Stovall took first place in the event with a meet record and ECAC qualifying time of 9:14.65. The time is the seventh best in school history.
Senior Ashley Bailey picked up where she left off last year, picking up a victory in the pole vault with an ECAC qualifying mark of 12' 3 ½".
In total, the Blue Hens piled up 10 top-five finishes. Five of those performances came by way of underclassmen.
Sophomore Taliah Cintron (third in 60m hurdles) and freshman Alyssa Armor (fifth in 500m) had top-five finishes of their own, as well as teaming up on the 4x400 meter relay with Halima Scott and Kai Starnes for a top-three performance at the meet.
Armor's time of 1:16.38 in the 500m was the fourth best in school history and narrowly missed setting the freshman record in the event.
Freshman Roshelle Leaks leaped her way into the ECAC Indoor Championships with a mark of 18' 3 ¾", which was the fifth best mark in program history.
Sophomore Myrissa McFolling-Young followed up her outstanding freshman season by starting her second year with a top-two performance in the shot put with a throw of 43' 9 ¼".
In addition, the junior duo of Roxanne Ramirez and Stephanie Bazan went second and fifth in the 5000m with times of 17:56.07 and 18:03.61, respectively.
Delaware returns to action next Saturday when they travel to the Gulden Invitational, hosted by Bucknell University.
