TOWSON, Md. – Conference games are a different animal. Add a heated rivalry on top of that and you've got a whole another level of intensity.
That's exactly what the University of Delaware men's lacrosse team faced on Saturday against long-standing rival Towson, who used a fourth quarter outburst to pull away with a 13-7 victory over the Blue Hens.
The Blue Hens find themselves in a tie for second-place, losses by Hofstra and Fairfield later today would secure Delaware's ticket to the CAA Tournament, a place it hasn't been since 2014.
Facing 48 shots on the day, sophomore goalkeeper Matt DeLuca registered double-digit saves once again with 12 on the day. He has tallied double-digit saves in nine of the Blue Hens' 12 games this season and currently leads the CAA with just shy of 12 per game this spring.
Offensively, sophomore Charlie Kitchen extended his goal scoring streak to 15 with two goals and two assists on the day. Senior Dean DiSimone also added two goals and an assist on the day, while freshman Adam Fulton got on the board for the first time in his young career.
Towson grabbed momentum early taking a 4-1 lead in the first 12 minutes of action, but a goal by DiSimone with less than 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter swung momentum back towards the Blue Hens.
Fulton fired one home off an assist from senior Will Hirschmann and DiSimone's second goal tired things up at 4-4 with five minutes to play in the second quarter.
Towson answered with a goal before the break to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
Kitchen made his presence known in the third quarter with two goals, including a man-up goal with three minutes to play in the frame to send the teams into the fourth with things even at 6-6.
The Tigers exploded for seven goals in the final frame to pull away with the 13-7 win.
Delaware returns to action next Friday evening when they host CAA foe Drexel at Delaware Stadium. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
