PRINCETON, N.J. – Two weeks.
That's all that separates the University of Delaware track and field program from its quest for a CAA Championship.
This weekend, the Blue Hens used the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University as its preparation grounds for that championship and came back with nine top-10 finishes, including victories by Ashley Bailey (pole vault) and Roxanne Ramirez (5000m).
Bailey continued her dominant spring season by claiming the top spot in the pole vault, clearing 12' 7 ½”. The Middletown, Del. native is now 5-for-5 in pole vault wins this spring and has collected 10 event wins in the 2018 season combined (indoor and outdoor).
Ramirez raced to a collegiate best time of 17:43.70 in the 5000m to win her section at the meet.
In the 100m hurdles, Olivia Goncerz and Carlyn McGrath earned top-10 collegiate finishes, both clocking personal bests in the event at 14.53 and 14.55, respectively. Goncerz's time gives her an ECAC qualifying mark and puts her sixth-fastest in school history, while McGrath is right behind her with the seventh-fastest time in program history.
The throws once again had a strong weekend, led by senior captain Melissa Zegeer, who unleashed a lifetime best of 162' 9” in the hammer throw, which is the ninth-best in school history.
In the javelin, Niyah Cosme and Kristina Valko both notched spots in the top-10 with tosses of 133' 5” and 130' 6”, respectively.
Sophomore Michaela Meyer clocked in a new personal best in the 800m with a time of 2:12.95 to win her heat and make her the seventh-fastest 800m runner in program history.
The Blue Hens return to action with a busy week, first at the prestigious Penn Relays, beginning on Thursday, followed by the Delaware Open on Sunday, April 29th.
