Blue Hens Pressure Rutgers In Second Half, But Fall 3-0

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Littered with the youth of 12 freshmen, eight of which would make their debut on the evening, and taking on one of the top teams in the country, Friday's season opener was a tall task for the University of Delaware Blue Hens.
The Blue Hens showed the fight that had been talked about all preseason, pressuring the Scarlet Knights for most of the second half, but ultimately, Rutgers was able to pull out the 3-0 victory in the 2018 opener for both teams.
RU got on the board early with a goal nine minutes in and made it 2-0 in the 24thminute to grab momentum from the jump. However, Delaware would fight back with freshmen Anna Diffendal and Toni Starova both having dangerous chances in the first half, but were just off the mark.
A big time performance by freshman Kamryn Stablein in goal, including stopping a penalty kick, allowed the Blue Hens to stay close, possessing the ball for much of the second half.
RU was able to add a late goal and secure the 3-0 victory before the game was called with 2:29 to play due to lightning in the area.

"I was proud of the fight that our team showed for 90 minutes tonight. Rutgers is, without a doubt, one of the best teams in the country and for our girls to come out and put together the 2nd half performance that they did is a credit to their character. Right now, we are learning valuable lessons about ourselves and how we want to play that are going to help us moving forward. The future is bright for this group and I'm excited about the direction we're heading." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
