Blue Hens Win 3-1 Thriller Over La Salle To Improve to 2-0

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball literally dug deep to roll off three straight set victories en route to a thrilling 3-1 win over La Salle on Saturday afternoon in the Delaware Classic.
Junior Andie Hanus led a tremendous defensive effort with 28 digs on the afternoon. As a team, the Blue Hens finished with 109 digs in the victory, the most since a five-set match with Penn back on September 19, 2012.
Sophomore Courtnie Roberts posted her second straight double-double with 49 assists and 19 digs, while junior Maria Bellinger led a powerful offensive attack with 21 kills, while also tallying 11 digs on the afternoon.
The entire match was a back-and-forth contest with the Explorers taking the first set 25-22. However, the Blue Hens would take momentum with a 26-24 win of the second set to propel themselves to a 25-20 win in the third and clinching the match with a 25-23 win in set four, including the final points of the match.
With the win, the Blue Hens are now 2-0 for just the second time in the past eight seasons.
Quotable
"I really thought today was a big win for us. I didn't think we played great in any of the sets, we didn't hit particularly well, but our fight and our defensive effort was tremendous. Our defense was really what kept us in it and it allowed us to gain momentum to carry us on the offensive side down the stretch." – Head Coach Sara Matthews
"The beginning part of each season, we're still trying to figure out playing with each other to an extent and I think the best way to do that is go through the struggle together. I think for us to fight through that adversity and find a way to win is a big step for us." – Sophomore Andie Hanus
