Blue Hens Fall in Four Sets To Villanova in Delaware Classic Finale

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware volleyball team captured the third set from Villanova but could not complete the comeback as the Blue Hens dropped a four-set verdict (20-25, 18-25, 25-20, 20-25) to the Wildcats Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Villanova claimed the Delaware Classic title by winning all three of its matches at the invitational while the Blue Hens, who opened the season with victories over Morgan State and La Salle, dropped to 2-1 on the year.
UD junior outside hitter Maria Bellinger drilled a match-high 18 kills for the Blue Hens, while Cailey Bracken added 14 kills and Brooke Robertson contributed nine. Courtnie Roberts dished out 41 assists to go with 17 digs, while Andie Hanus paced the defensive effort with 26 digs in addition to her 10 assists.
Bracken tallied 20 digs on the afternoon, while Bellinger had 18 and Maddie Judge added 14.
Sanaa Barnes paced Villanova with 16 kills, while Emma Decker handed out 41 assists and Regan Lough made 34 digs.
After dropping the opening two sets, Delaware trailed 19-16 in the third frame before rallying back. The Blue Hens took four straight points to take the lead, and following a Wildcats point, UD closed the stanza on a five-point run to get on the board. However Villanova jumped out to an early 6-1 advantage in the fourth set and led the rest of the way.

Delaware returns to action next weekend at the FIU Invitational in Miami, Fla. The Blue Hens will take on Savannah State on Friday at 9:30 a.m., before facing the host Panthers at 5:30 p.m. later that day. UD wraps up play at the tournament by facing Chicago State on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
