NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team earned its first win of the 2018 season on Saturday night with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Seton Hall at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
The Blue Hens (1-2) struck first 10 minutes into the match when Noa Benninga took a feed from Mark Battle and fired a low shot in the left corner of the net to give Delaware the early lead.
Less than five minutes later Ryan Calhoun collected a long pass from Robert Campbell, dribbled past Pirates goalkeeper Andreas Nota and drilled the ball into the open net from the left side to make it a two-goal game.
Seton Hall (2-1) got on the board exactly two minutes later when CJ Tibbling fed a cross to Carlton McKenzie, who scored from six yards out.
However the Blue Hens added an insurance goal in the 68th minute as Halvard Ramstad lofted a long crossfield pass to Campbell, who dribbled down the left side and beat Nota to close the scoring.
Hen Scratchings
• Delaware defeated Seton Hall for the fifth straight year
• Campbell leads the Blue Hens with two goals and five points
• Todd Morton made four saves in the UD goal
• Delaware held a slim 13-12 shot advantage
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"I asked for a response after the game against Pitt, a very good ACC squad, and I got it tonight, so I am very proud of the start and commitment. Even when we went down to playing with 10 men we managed to score a goal against a very well-coached team. I am delighted with the team effort tonight. We asked our guys to be ready mentally, and they were. We had two goals before you knew it, so I am really proud of them. We are maturing as a group and I thought tonight was a very mature performance."
Robert Campbell
"In the beginning our pressing was working really well, and everyone was hunting the ball. I think in the second half we settled down, kept the ball, used each other well and ended up with a result. I saw a great ball from Hal (Ramstad) and after I took my first touch I just relaxed, tried to compose myself and just put it away."
