NEWARK, Del. – Princeton scored two goals in the final 18 minutes of the match as the Tigers defeated Delaware, 2-0, Wednesday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Princeton (1-2) held a 6-2 shot advantage in the opening half, but Blue Hen goalkeeper Todd Morton made a couple of diving saves to keep the match scoreless. However in the 74th minute Sean McSherry collected a loose ball in the middle of the field, dribbled right and fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the net to put the Tigers in front.
Princeton added an insurance goal in the 88th minute when McSherry passed to Gaby Paniagua who scored from five yards out.
The Tigers posted a 14-5 shot advantage and a narrow 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Morton made five saves in 73:40 of action for the Blue Hens (1-3) while Blai Palmi added one stop in the final 16:20.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"Every team I've coached has had an identity that leads to their success. With this team the recipe has to be a smart, consistent work ethic from start to finish. We need to have a consistent quality in our passing and our decisions. All of this is gearing up for conference play. We'll be tested again with California and Stanford in the Pac 12. It's nice to have Fede (Prieto) back, and hopefully we'll get Noa (Benninga) and Robert (Campbell) back as well. Our quality and mentality have to be more consistent for us to be successful. I'm optimistic we'll get there; we're a work in progress but will improve."
