NEWARK, Del. – Energy and effort has been a major focal point for the University of Delaware volleyball team this season. From the opening serve, there was no question that the Blue Hens brought exactly that on Friday night.
Delaware powered its way past a talented Grand Canyon team, 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-23), in the last match of the first day of the Blue Hen Invitational at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens jumped all over the lopes in the first set, racking up six blocks and holding GCU to a -.062 hitting percentage en route to a 25-16 win. Junior Maria Bellinger took over in the second set with seven kills to lead Delaware to a 25-21 win and a quick 2-0 lead.
It looked like GCU was finding its stride in the third when it took a 19-13 lead. Enter junior Cailey Bracken. Bracken unleashed two kills that ignited an 8-2 Delaware run that evened the set at 21-21. Bellinger would help finish the Lopes off with back-to-back kills to claim the set and match with a 25-23 win.
Bracken and Bellinger have become quite a force for the Blue Hens, combining for 32 kills and 27 assists in the victory. Classmate Courtnie Roberts continued to be the jack of all trades for Delaware finishing with five kills, 35 assists, nine digs and four blocks on the night.

"I can't say enough about our group's effort tonight. We were really so-so with our energy and effort in our first match today and to bounce back after a tough five set match and a few hours later play with the energy they did tonight was just tremendous. Grand Canyon's a very talented team and our girls did a great job executing the game plan and really taking them out of their game. It's just a great step forward in what we're trying to build here." – Head Coach Sara Matthews
