Blue Hens Win 3-2 Thriller Over Marist In Opener of Blue Hen Invitational

NEWARK, Del. – The first match of the Blue Hen Invitational for the University of Delaware volleyball team was not for the faint of heart.
In a thrilling, back-and-forth battle, the Blue Hens defeated the Red Foxes of Marist College, 3-2 (24-26, 25-16, 25-27, 25-20, 16-14) on Friday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Sophomore Courtnie Roberts entered the match ranking second in the CAA in assists per set and continued her strong season with her fifth double-double of the year, finishing with 58 assists and 13 digs.
Junior Cailey Bracken also had a career day with 15 kills, while also chipping in 23 digs and hitting .297. Classmate Bailey Pearlman continued her surge with a big offensive day with four aces and 16 kills for the Blue Hens.
Junior Maria Bellinger had her third 20-plus kill outing of the season with 22 on the day, while also tallying up seven digs.
Marist would take an outright battle win in the first set, 26-24, but the Blue Hens responded right away with a dominant 25-16 win in the second.
The Red Foxes would once again win a battle in the third, 27-25, but Delaware would come alive late in the fourth, winning six of the final seven points of the set to even the match at 2-2 and send it to the decisive fifth set.
As it was all game long, the fifth would be back and forth with neither team leading by more than three at any point. Marist would hold leads of 10-7 and 12-9, but the Blue Hens would never let go, scoring seven of the final nine points of the fifth to take the victory.
