Two Blue Hens Recognized as Preseason All-CAA Picks

RICHMOND, Va. –The University of Delaware women's lacrosse team had two players honored while the Blue Hens were selected to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association in the league's preseason voting, as decided upon by the conference's head coaches.
Senior Chantae Simms and junior Mia DeRuggiero each garnered All-CAA Preseason Team honors.
A two-year starting defender for the Blue Hens, Simms earned IWLCA Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team, All-CAA Second Team and CAA All-Tournament Team accolades a season ago. She led Delaware with 50 ground balls and was second in the CAA and 37th nationally with 2.78 ground balls per game. Additionally, Simms tied for sixth in UD single-season history with 31 caused turnovers and was seventh in the CAA and 30th nationally with 1.72 caused turnovers per game. She enters her senior year ranked ninth in program history with 51 career caused turnovers.
DeRuggiero was also an All-CAA Second Team pick in 2018 and appeared in the starting lineup for all 18 games as a sophomore. She finished the year second in the Delaware record books with 36 assists while ranking second in the CAA and 27th nationally with 2.00 assists per game. DeRuggiero was second for the Blue Hens with 40 points on 36 assists and four goals. She also picked up 21 ground balls, 12 caused turnovers and three draw controls.
The defending National Champion James Madison Dukes were picked to finish atop the league standings in 2019 by earning six first place votes for a total of 36 points. Las season's CAA championship runner-up, Towson, collected one first place vote and 31 points to finish in second.
Elon and Hofstra were slated third and fourth, respectively, while the Hens collected 17 points for the fifth place slot. Drexel and William & Mary rounded out the standings in sixth and seventh places, respectively.
Delaware begins the 2019 campaign by traveling to Temple for a 3 p.m. draw on Friday, February 8. The Hens open their home schedule at Delaware Stadium on Saturday, February 16 with a 1 p.m. draw against Penn.
