NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware men's soccer team battled 17th-ranked James Madison but could not push across a goal as the Blue Hens dropped a 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association match to the Dukes Saturday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
JMU opened the scoring in the 11th minute as after a Dukes player was taken down in the box, Manuel Ferriol converted a penalty kick. In the 33rd minute Dennis Mensah collected a service in the middle of the field from Petur Thorsteinsson and scored from 10 yards out to make it a 2-0 game.
Tyler Clegg collected a pass off the right side from Clay Obara and tapped in a shot from close range in the 75th minute to close the scoring for JMU.
The Dukes held a 9-5 shot advantage on the night, while the Blue Hens took four of the seven corner kicks. Renan Thomazo stopped three shots in the UD goal, while Dukes keeper T.J. Bush made one save on the night.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"It was good to have Ryan (Mertz), David (Vavrous) and Tommy (McGrail) back on the field. I'm very happy that we limited James Madison to nine shots, so give them credit for scoring three goals off that total. We just lacked a bit in transition, and the quality wasn't quite there tonight. We had a favorable result with Drexel tying Hofstra, so a CAA berth which has been our goal since the start of the season is still very much in our hands."
