MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Delaware men's soccer team battled Charleston to a scoreless draw in double overtime during a hard-fought battle Saturday night at Patriots Point.
The Blue Hens picked up a critical road point in Colonial Athletic Association play, moving into sixth place in the conference table at the halfway mark of the league schedule.
Delaware carried a majority of the play in the first half, taking eight of the 11 shots during the opening 45 minutes. The second half was evenly played, with each team attempting four shots. The Cougars took four of the five shots in the two overtime periods.
UD held a 13-11 shot advantage on the night, but put just two on goal. Timo Hummrich fired a team-high four shots for the Blue Hens, while Jack Leonard and Brandon Sengphachanh each attempted two. The Blue Hens enjoyed a 13-3 edge in corner kicks.
Blue Hen goalkeeper Renan Thomazo stopped three shots on the night, including a huge save on a close range attempt by Charleston's Zach Clements during the final minute of regulation.
Delaware remained unbeaten all-time against Charleston, with five wins and three ties in eight meetings since the 2013 season.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"Another point on the board for us tonight in a very competitive game in Charleston, so we can be happy with that. The lads gave it great effort to break the deadlock and we had a couple of good looks, but couldn't quite manage to put one away."
