Delaware Shuts Out Monmouth, Falls to Ball State at Madeira Beach Invitational

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Delaware posted a 10-0 victory over Monmouth before dropping a 9-0 decision to Ball State as the Blue Hens split a pair of five-inning games Saturday afternoon at the Madeira Beach Invitational.

Delaware wasted little time in taking the lead against the Hawks, as Hanna Garber led off the bottom of the first with a double and Halle Kisamore followed with a two-run homer. Later in the frame Brittney Mendoza singled home Anna Steinmetz, while Brooke Glanden then crossed the plate on a double steal attempt to make it a 4-0 game.

Back to back doubles by Glanden and Karolina Flores tacked on another run in the bottom of the third before Mendoza followed with a two-run homer, her third of the season, to increase the Blue Hens' lead to seven.

Delaware added three runs in the fourth, highlighted by another RBI double by Flores, to close the scoring.

Meanwhile Blue Hen pitcher Sarah Piening fired a two-hit shutout during five innings in the circle, recording three strikeouts while winning her third game the year.

The Blue Hens and Ball State were scoreless through two innings, but the Cardinals scored five times in the top of the third. Janae Hogg belted a two-run homer to open the scoring, while three more runs scored on bases loaded walks. The Cardinals then added four more runs in the fourth, as Madison Lee and Stacy Payton delivered RBI singles.

Delaware had just two hits during the contest, a single by Reyna de Jesus in the third and a double by Mendoza in the fifth.
