COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The future of the University of Delaware track & field program is bright and Saturday showed plenty of evidence of that.
A small group of Blue Hens traveled to the Frank Colden Invitational at Ursinus College and leading the way was several underclassmen, including sophomore Myrissa McFolling-Young who earned a spot at ECAC Championships in the shot put at the meet.
McFolling-Young was a part of 15 top-five finishes for the Blue Hens, 12 of which came from underclassmen. Senior Carlyn McGrath (Pentathlon), freshman Halima Scott (200m), freshman Whitney Bailey-Hicks (triple jump) and McFolling-Young (shot put) all came away with victories.
"We only had a small group travel to compete, but I was pleased with how we performed," head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith said. "Getting better each time we step on the track is what we're aiming to do and I think we're doing just that."
McFolling-Young made it nine ECAC qualifiers for the Blue Hens with her win in the shot put, reaching 45' 5" with her final throw of the day. It was the third-longest throw in program history. Classmate Bethany Clement, also grabbed a fourth-place finish in the event.
McGrath was joined by Sofia Janotti and Riley Murtha in the pentathlon, all finishing in the top-five in the event. All three finished in the top-six in program history with their totals. McGrath (3142) and Janotti (3058) grabbed 1-2 at the meet.
Bailey-Hicks continues to impress early on in her Blue Hen career, taking home the win in the triple jump with a leap of 37' 7 ¾", good for fifth all-time in program history. Sophomore Halimah Roberson finished second behind her teammate, clearing 36' 6 ¼".
Bailey-Hicks wasn't done, finishing top-four in the long jump (17' 7"), just behind her teammate and classmate Roshelle Leaks (17' 9").
Leaks turned to the track for her second top-three finish on the day, clocking in at 26.65 in the 200m, just behind her teammate Scott, who claimed her first victory of her young career with a time of 25.72.
Scott, Leaks and senior Andriene Rose all finished in the top-four in the 60m to round out the top showings for the Blue Hens at the meet.
Delaware returns to the track this weekend when they travel to Annapolis, Md. again to compete in the Navy Select meet on Friday, February 8.
