NORFOLK, Va. – Delaware took the opener 3-1 before dropping an 8-7 heartbreaker in the nightcap as the Blue Hens split a season-opening doubleheader at Norfolk State Friday night in head coach Jen Steele's UD debut.
Delaware took the lead in the opener in the top of the third as Hanna Garber singled to left, move to second on an obstruction call, and scored when Reyna de Jesus singled to center. However the Spartans pulled even in the bottom of the fourth when Shelby Deschamps crossed the plate on a fielder's choice.
The Blue Hens regained the lead in the top of the sixth as de Jesus reached on an error, moved to third on a single by Anna Steinmetz, and scored when Brooke Glanden laced a single to right. One out later pinch runner Julia Solderitch crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Karolina Flores.
UD freshman Katie Stahre then fired the final two of her three scoreless relief innings, allowing just two hits, to earn the victory in her first career appearance for the Blue Hens.
Norfolk State jumped out to a big lead in the nightcap, scoring twice in the bottom of the first, three times in the second and two more in the third to take a 7-0 advantage. But the Blue Hens would not quit.
Brittney Mendoza drove home Steinmetz and Flores with a double in the fourth before scoring on a Sarah Bessel single to cut the margin to 7-3. The following frame Glanden doubled home Garber, while Halle Kisamore then singled home Solderitch as Delaware pulled within a pair.
Mendoza then reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the seventh, allowing Glanden and Flores to score to tie the game at 7-7. The Blue Hens had a chance to take the lead later in the inning, but Flores was thrown out trying to steal home.
In the bottom of the seventh Hunter Halford led off with a single and eventually scored on a two-out double by Makenna Heimann to give the Spartans the victory.
Glanden led the Blue Hens with four hits on the day, while Steinmetz added three.
