Blue Hens Drop Game One To New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Coming into the weekend, the University of Delaware knew that New Mexico State was a potent offensive team.
In the opener of a four-game swing against the Aggies, the Blue Hens saw that front and center with NMSU pulling away late to take home an 11-3 victory over Delaware in the series opener.
"We just got beat by a team who is just better than us right now. Until we put all phases of the game together, we are going to continue to struggle," head coach Jim Sherman said.
Offensively, Vinny Vaccone had the Blue Hens first three-hit performance of the year, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and double in the game. Erik Bowren also had a mult-hit game with two knocks and a run scored, while Jordan Hutchins launched his first HR of the year.
Redshirt junior Brandon Walter scattered seven hits over four innings of work, while striking out four and allowing just three earned runs.
"I told the guys after the game, it's not an effort thing, we know their effort is there, we're just a really inexperience offensive club and we'll keep working to get better and grown together by the time conference play starts," Sherman said.
Both teams were held scoreless for the first two frames, but NMSU got a longball in the home half of the third to grab a 2-0 cushion.
Hutchins and the Blue Hens would answer right back with his two-run HR in the top of the fourth to even the game at 2-2.
From there, NMSU would score in every remaining inning to eventually push its lead to 11-2 entering the ninth.
Vaccone's RBI double would plate the final Delaware run in the 11-3 loss.
