Blue Hens Battle Maryland To the Wire, Fall 11-6

The Blue Hens once again, battled to the last pitch, but dropped a tough 11-6 decision to Big Ten foe Maryland on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
"Obviously we'd like a better outcome, but I thought it was a great game for the first seven innings with two teams really battling, unfortunately, the last two innings got away from us a bit, but our guys kept fighting," head coach Jim Sherman said. "We need to continue to get better and continue to fight through the journey as we look to really hit our stride when conference play starts in a few weeks."
Seven different Blue Hens had a hit on the afternoon led by Jordan Hutchins, who finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three walks in the contest. Junior Jack Goan launched his first HR of his Delaware career, while freshman Austin Colmery has now reached base safely in all six of his starts as a Blue Hen.
The Blue Hens got solid outings from Derek Wakeley, along with freshmen Jack Dubecq and Justin Tomovich. Wakeley has now allowed just three baserunners total in his past five-plus innings of work.
"I thought we got some good innings from a couple guys today, they competed and really gave us a chance," Sherman added. "Offensively, we're starting to come on. Hutchins had a great day at the plate, really good at-bats every time he was up. It was good to see Jack launch one out today, hopefully that can get him going a bit as he's a key part of the lineup for us."
Delaware got things started right away with Kevin Mohollen ripping a double to lead off the bottom of the first and two batters later, Hutchins laced a double of his own to left field to plate Mohollen and give the Blue Hens a 1-0 lead.
Goan would add to the lead in the home half of the second when he blasted a 3-1 pitch over the left field wall for a solo shot. Singles from Chance DiFebbo and Colmery would follow, two batters later Erik Bowren sent a single through the right side to plate DiFebbo and make it a 3-0 Blue Hens lead after two complete.
Maryland would finally get on the board in the fourth in a big way, using two extra base hits to plate four runs and grab a 4-3 lead.
The hurlers would make it stay that way into the top of the eighth when the Terrapins would try and break things open with a grand slam to push the advantage to 8-3.
Delaware wouldn't go quietly, loading the bases with one out in the home half of the eighth, which led to a two-out single from Hutchins and an RBI from Vinny Vaccone and it turned into an 8-6 game.
Maryland would put it away in the ninth, adding three more runs to come away with the 11-6 victory.
