NEWARK, Del. – Some of the finest talent from the First State was on display at Bob Hannah Stadium on Friday. 33 players from Delaware high schools faced off when the University of Delaware and Goldey Beacom opened the 2019 Delaware Classic.
An outstanding pitching performance from Brandon Walter and a parade of offense led the Blue Hens to a 15-1 victory over the visiting Lightning on a beautiful afternoon in Newark.
"Today was a day we just hadn't had yet this year and it was great for our young club to experience it and enjoy it. It was a complete effort from the pitching to the hitting and the defensive effort," head coach Jim Sherman said. "I'm really pleased with the approach we took and look forward to continuing to build on today's effort."
Walter was dominant on the mound, tossing eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out 12. It was the second-highest strikeout total of his career. After nearly two years off recovering from Tommy John, the Delaware native earned his first win since April 16, 2017.
"It was great for us to get the win and hopefully will allow us to build some momentum moving forward," Walter said. "I was able to really get ahead with my fastball, which allowed me to set up my other pitches."
Nine different Blue Hens notched hits on the day with Jordan Hutchins leading the way yet again with a 3-for-5 performance, including three runs scored and four RBIs. Jack Goan, Austin Colmery and Joseph Carpenter all had multi-hit days, combining for six hits, two runs scored and six RBIs.
"We got some really nice offensive performance to compliment Walter's effort on the mound. Hutchins continues to swing the bat well and it's good to see Jack Goan really get going, I think he's going to be a key part of our lineup," Sherman said. "Two of the young guys in Carpenter and Colmery are giving us good at-bats at the bottom of the order and they had really good afternoons for us."
Delaware jumped out early with Hutchins ripping a two-run double into right field just three batters into the game for the Blue Hens, grabbing a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Hens would string together six hits and three walks in the first two innings to quickly jump out to an 8-0 advantage.
Carpenter pushed it to 9-0 on the first pitch of the third, launching his first career HR over the left field wall.
Delaware would add runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth to roll to the 15-1 home victory.
