NEWARK, Del. – Blue Hen junior Sarah Piening tossed a no-hitter in the opener as the Delaware softball team swept a doubleheader from Coppin State, 1-0, and 5-2, Sunday afternoon.
Piening, who picked up her seventh win of the season, fired the 16th no-hitter in program history and the first since Carolyn Szymanski vs. Monmouth on April 2, 2014. Piening allowed only a leadoff walk in the top of the third inning, but retired the other 21 batters she faced.
Piening struck out seven batters on the day, and was mobbed in the circle after getting Melanie Aguilera to foul out to end the game.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Blue Hens (10-12) scored the only run of the contest. Hanna Garber worked a one-out walk, and after she stole second, she came around to score when Halle Kisamore drilled an RBI single up the middle.
Kisamore's hit was one of just three in the game for Delaware, along with a Reyna de Jesus double in the third and a Brooke Glanden single in the fourth.
Coppin State (2-8) jumped in front of the nightcap by scoring a run in the top of the first inning, but the Blue Hens answered in the bottom of the second on consecutive singles by Brittney Mendoza and Karolina Flores. After the Eagles went back in front in the third, Delaware again pulled even in the bottom of the fourth on two Coppin State errors and another RBI single by Flores.
The Blue Hens took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth, as Kisamore led off with a triple and Glanden followed with a triple of her own. Anna Steinmetz then hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Glanden, and after Flores reached on an error, she scored on a double by Sarah Bessel.
Maddi Marsh, who earned her second win of the year, then retired the Eagles in order in the seventh to seal the victory. Marsh allowed just two runs, one earned, on five hits with four strikeouts in the complete game effort.
Flores finished with two hits and two RBI at the plate for the Blue Hens, while Glanden scored twice.
