NEWARK, Del. – Sarah Piening tossed her second consecutive shutout while Anna Steinmetz belted a two-run homer as the Delaware softball team won its third straight game with a 3-0 victory over Lehigh Wednesday afternoon.
Piening, the current CAA Pitcher of the Week who was coming off her no-hitter vs. Coppin State on Sunday, scattered seven hits and struck out four while winning her eighth game of the year.
Delaware (11-12) took the lead in the bottom of the second inning as Steinmetz led off with a walk, moved to second when Karolina Flores was hit by a pitch, and scored on a two-out single to leftcenter by Chayanna Gallardo.
Lehigh (6-14) loaded the bases in the top of the third inning, but Piening retired Jaelynn Chesson on a flyout to rightfield to escape the jam.
Hanna Garber then led off the bottom of the third with a bunt single, and two outs later Steinmetz blasted a pitch over the centerfield fence for her 40th career home run.
Piening would make the lead stand up, firing four more scoreless frames including a strikeout of Mary-Hannah Smith to end the game.
Steinmetz, who is now tied for the team lead with four home runs this year, finished 2 for 2 with a walk at the plate for the Blue Hens. Garber, Gallardo, Halle Kisamore and Ali Davis each added hits as Delaware won for the fourth time during its five-game homestand.
