PHILADELPHIA – The Blue Hen Second Varsity Fours boat won its race as the Delaware rowing team opened its 2019 spring season on Saturday against Saint Joseph's and Villanova on the Schuylkill River.
The UD boat finished with a time of 7:45.2, barely edging Villanova at 7:45.4 to post Delaware's lone victory of the day.
The Blue Hen Varsity Eights (6:38.8), Third Varsity Eights (7:38.9) and Novice Eights (7:28.8) all finished in second place in their respective races. The Varsity Fours (7:43.5) and Second Varsity Eights (6:55.7) both placed third in their races.
"It was a solid opener for us, we saw good energy from all crews," head coach Kevin Gruber said. "We knew going in to the spring season that there's still a lot of room for growth. Saturday's racing confirmed we have work to do, but we're pleased with the efforts. I'm especially excited for the novice athletes who completed their first-ever 2k sprint races, it was a big day in their young rowing careers."
Delaware returns to the water this Saturday when the Blue Hens compete in the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia.
