Clutch Hitting, Pitching Lead Blue Hens Past Huskies, 7-3

BROOKLINE, Mass. – No one will ever question the character of this year's University of Delaware baseball team.
After key injuries and more adversity than most teams face in a year, the Blue Hens continue to battle and clutch hitting and key pitching led them to a hard-fought 7-3 win in game two of a three-game set at Northeastern on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Boston.
"I was really happy with our club today. We got an outstanding effort on the mound and we came up with some big hits when we needed them," head coach Jim Sherman said. "Our guys kept fighting and were able to do what they needed to do to come away with the win."
Offensively, Delaware pounded out nine hits, getting multi-hit performances from Erik Bowren, Jordan Hutchins and Joseph Carpenter. Carpenter had three RBIs and two runs scored as well, while Jack Goan had two big RBIs late to help lead the Blue Hens to the win.
On the mound, Chris Ludman, Joey Silan and Derek Wakeley combined to scatter nine hits and allow just three earned runs, while striking out seven on the day. The Huskies were held scoreless for the final six innings of the contest.
"I really was happy with our pitching effort today. I thought all three guys pounded the strike zone and competed every pitch to really give us a chance to win," Sherman added.
Northeastern would strike first, scoring a run in the second and two in the third to grab an early 3-0 lead. Ludman would settle in and keep the Huskies off the board into the sixth, which allowed the Delaware offense to get going.
Hutchins would ignite the Blue Hens in the sixth with a two-out double, followed by a walk to Carpenter and a single from Vinny Vaccone. Goan would come up with a big base knock, scoring Hutchins and Carpenter to make it a 3-2 game after six.
Delaware would hang a crooked number on the scoreboard in the seventh with Kevin Mohollen getting a rally started with two outs, singling through the right side to put two runners on. Bowren and Hutchins ripped back-to-back RBI singles to give the Blue Hens a 4-3 lead.
Three pitches later, Carpenter broke the game open, launching a three-run longball over the left field fence to make it 7-3.
Silan and Wakeley would allow just two baserunners over the final three innings to secure the win for the Blue Hens.
