Blue Hens Drop Hard-Fought Midweek Meeting To Maryland, 11-6

That's exactly what is happening for the University of Delaware baseball team who continues to fight every single time it takes the field, dropping a tough, hard-fought battle to Big Ten foe Maryland on Tuesday afternoon, 11-6.
"We're all trying to stay as positive as we can during this tough stretch for our ball club. Tonight, I thought we saw some good things from different guys, but we had some mistakes that we need to clean up if we're going to expect to beat good teams," head coach Jim Sherman said. "We have to keep working and working. No one is going to feel sorry for us and we don't expect them to. We're going to turn this around."
The middle of the Blue Hens' order of Jordan Hutchins, Zack Miller and Vinny Vaccone had a big day at the plate, combining to go 7-for-13 with four runs scored and four RBIs. Miller had his second straight three-hit performance and has now hit safely in eight of his 10 games played this year.
Freshman Joey Silan made his first collegiate start, tossing five solid innings and keeping Delaware in the game for much of the early half of the contest.
"The three guys in the middle of the lineup gave us some really good at-bats tonight and really ignited the run production for us all game long," Sherman added. "I know you would think it with 11 runs on the board, but I thought our pitchers all gave us a chance to win and competed, but those defensive lapses just need to be cleaned up."
Delaware got the scoring started early with a two-out first inning double from Hutchins, followed four pitches later by an RBI single from Miller to plate the game's first run and give the Blue Hens a 1-0 advantage.
The tone of the afternoon would be set in the first as Maryland responded with two runs in the its half of the inning to grab a 2-1 lead.
After the Terrapins pushed their lead to 4-1, the Blue Hens exploded for their biggest inning of the year with Hutchins, Miller and Vaccone all lacing back-to-back-to-back RBI singles to quickly tie the game back up at 4-4 in the matter of seven pitches.
A pitching change and two pitches later, Jack Goan launched a double into the right centerfield gap to plate two more and give Delaware a 6-4 cushion.
Once again, Maryland responded, plating three runs in its half of the fifth to reclaim the lead, 7-6.
The bullpens would lock into a battle from that point with the Terrapins adding three more in the sixth and one in the eighth to grab the 11-6 victory.
