Put your hard hat on and finish the job.
Â
Against the back drop of a construction site – a sign of great things to come – the Delaware men's lacrosse team earned its best start since 2006 with a 10-6 win over visiting Binghamton Saturday afternoon.
Â
"I am proud of our team and the way that they competed today," said head coach Ben Deluca. "We learned a lot about ourselves to this point in the season and we hope to build on this success as we look ahead to a tough four-game road stretch that leads into conference play."
Senior captain Joe Eisele put on a four-goal show, Charlie Kitchen added two goals and one assist. Defensively, the Blue Hens did not allow a fourth quarter goal, led by junior Matt Deluca who stopped 13 of the 19 shots he saw. The netminder from Farmingdale, New York sits at No. 10 all-time in Delaware history with 400 saves.
"I think it came down to the communication throughout the defense," said Alex Brunner. "We played within our game plan and it started with the close defense and the connection with the rope unit.
Â
The Bearcats (0-4) were paced by Konen Griffin and T.J. Tiernan with two goals apiece.
Â
Knotted at 3-3 in the first, Eisele and Kitchen both found the back of the net to give the Hens a 5-3 advantage. A man up goal pulled the Bearcats within one, 5-4, but the Blue Hens responded with two-straight to take a 7-4 lead into the break.
Â
Binghamton threatened in the third, pulling within one again, 7-6. But Tye Kurtz ripped one into the top corner off a dish from Dean DiSimone and the Delaware defense did not allow a fourth quarter score to hang on for the 10-6 victory.
Â
The Blue Hens hit the road for four-straight contests, beginning with Johns Hopkins Saturday, March 16.
