NEWARK, Del. – There's nothing like being at home and having your supporters in the stands.
The University of Delaware track & field team put on a show for those supporters on Saturday, capitalizing on beautiful weather to post 26 top-three finishes, 10 event victories and four ECAC qualifiers at the annual Delaware Classic at Grant Stadium.
"I'm really proud of the girls for their effort today. It was one of our best weather days we've ever had for this event and I thought we came out with some extra energy being our home event," head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith said. "I'm excited to continue to get better as the season rolls on."
Delaware had a big day in the throws with Myrissa McFolling-Young and Alexis Lipnicky both claiming victories and both reaching ECAC qualifying marks.
Lipnicky busted out a season-best throw of 140' 2" to take home the win in the javelin and qualify for ECACs. It's the second-best mark of her career. McFolling-Young won the discus for the third straight week with a throw of 144'.
The 4x100 meter relay of Andriene Rose, Isis Pinkney, Roshelle Leaks and Halima Scott blistered the track to the time of 46.99 to not only win the event, but earn an ECAC qualifying time. It's the fourth-best time posted in the CAA this spring.
Rose would then take her performance to the jumps where she unleashed a career-best mark of 18' 9 ¼" to qualify for ECACs and win the event. It's the second-best jump in the CAA so far this season. Leaks finished second behind her teammate with a leap of 18' 4 ½".
Leaks and Scott jumped on the track to finish top-three in both the 100 and 200m finals with Scott taking home the 200 in a time of 25.58.
Also claiming victories at the event was Alyssa Armor in the 400m (57.04), Lauren Zodl in the 1500m (4:50.48), the 4x400 meter team of Scott, Armor, Nadia Khoury and Taliah Cintron (3:54.81), Ashley Bailey in the pole vault (11' 11 ¾") and Halimah Roberson in the triple jump (37' 7 ¾").
