NEWARK, Del. – There's nothing like home.
The University of Delaware baseball team showed that once again on Tuesday, pulling out a thrilling 6-5 win over visiting Saint Joseph's on a beautiful night at Bob Hannah Stadium.
"Our guys really have enjoyed playing under the lights here. There's an extra energy to our group in these games and tonight was no different," head coach Jim Sherman said. "I was really pleased with the way we kept responding when we needed to tonight. Now we have to shift our focus to another big conference weekend coming up."
Offensively, the Blue Hens pounded out 11 hits on the night, led by sophomore Jordan Hutchins who went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Classmate Zack Miller also had a three-hit night, while Erik Bowren and Kevin Mohollen each scored two runs on the night. Freshman Joseph Carpenter extended his hitting streak to 15 straight games and has now reached base safely in 26 straight.
On the mound, freshman Jack Dubecq continued his string of solid midweek starts, allowing just two earned on four hits in five innings of work, while sophomore Winston Allen came out of the pen to get the win, tossing the final three innings of the game.
"Hutch and Miller had good nights for us offensively and really got us going a couple times tonight," Sherman added. "I thought our pitching was solid with Jack having another good start for us and our two guys out of the pen did enough to help us secure the win."
Delaware would jump on top early with a leadoff single in the home half of the first from Mohollen and two batters later, a single from Hutchins plated the game's first run.
SJU would score two in the fourth to claim a lead, but in the bottom of the fifth, Hutchins struck again, launching a two-run homerun to left field to reclaim the lead at 3-2.
The Hawks would respond once again with and tie the game in the top half of the seventh.
Yet again, Hutchins and the Blue Hens had an answer with a two-run double from the Dover, Del. native, followed by an RBI single from Carpenter to give Delaware a 6-3 advantage.
SJU would get two back in the eighth and threaten in the ninth with two aboard, but a heads-up play by Bowren to nail a runner at the plate would end the game and secure another home victory for the Blue Hens.
