MALVERN, Pa. – Blue Hen freshman Matt Pulgini finished in second place while Delaware tied for third during a record-setting performance this week at the Villanova Spring Invitational.
After firing a 68 on Monday, Pulgini carded a five under par 66 during Tuesday's round on the par 71, 6,733-yard course at White Manor Country Club to finish in second place in the individual standings. Pulgini posted five birdies and added an eagle on the 15th hole during his second round, which is tied for the fifth lowest round in UD history.
Pulgini's eight under par 68-66-134 is the second lowest 36-hole score in Blue Hen history, behind only Justin Martinson's 133 during the Rehoboth Beach Spring Invitational at Kings Creek Golf Club on April 5, 2010.
Connor Schmidt of Drexel was the tournament medalist with an 11 under par 63-68-131, while Pulgini finished three shots back.
Delaware fired a 287 score on Monday and followed with a 274 on Tuesday, tying for third place out of 20 teams with a seven under par 561. The Blue Hens' 274 score tied the program single round record of 274 set at the Navy Fall Classic on Sept. 11, 2010, while their 561 total established a new 36-hole program record, breaking the previous mark by five strokes.
Drexel claimed the team title with a 551 score, Akron finished second at 560, and Delaware and Cleveland State tied for third at 561.
