JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Early in the indoor season, it was evident that this season would be different for junior Michaela Meyer of the University of Delaware track & field program.
Different is one way to describe it. Historic is another.
On Thursday night, Meyer became the first Blue Hen ever to run in the 800m at NCAA East Prelims. She clocked in with the second fastest time in school history at 2:07.87.
"I am so proud of the way Michaela ran at this meet and this entire season. She always puts it all out there and today was no different," Assistant Coach Ryan Waite said. "This was a great year for her where she learned a lot, made a lot of progress, and became hungrier to achieve even more next season. I'm excited to see her continue to improve next year."
Entering this spring, no one in school history had run under 2:08 in the 800m. Meyer achieved that twice this spring, including in the biggest race of her career on Thursday night.
The Southbury, Conn. native entered the meet ranked 39thin the region in the event. She finished 33rd.
Meyer is just the third mid-distance/distance runner in school history to reach the NCAA East meet, joining Lindsay Prettyman and former teammate Liz McGroarty.
