RICHMOND, Va. – For the second time in the past six years, University of Delaware Track & Field Head Coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith has been named CAA Coach of the Year.
McFarlane-Smith earned the honor after leading the Blue Hens to their first conference title since 2014. It was Delaware's second CAA title and fifth overall conference championship in the program's history.
As a team, the Blue Hens took home four meet victories, the most in nearly 10 years.
The program sent a school-record tying three student-athletes to the NCAA East Preliminary Round; Senior Ashley Bailey (pole vault), junior Michaela Meyer (800m)and sophomore Myrissa McFolling-Young (discus).
As a whole, the Blue Hens had 24 point scorers at the CAA meet and had 16 student-athletes earn All-CAA accolades.
Bailey was just the seventh Blue Hen in program history to be selected to attend the contest in back-to-back seasons. She owns a school record mark in pole vault at 13' 51/4". She also piled up four wins in the spring to reach a school record of 27 career victories. However, her most important victory came on June 1stwhen she became her family's first college graduate.
Meyer became the first ever Blue Hen to run in the 800m at the NCAA East Prelims, sprinting by with the second fastest time in school history at 2:07.87. No one in school history had run under 2:08 in the 800m: Meyer achieved that feat twice alone in the spring.
McFolling-Young became the third thrower ever and the youngest in program history to reach the coveted event. She brought home seven total victories for the Blue Hens this spring and will be a big part of their team next season.
