Blue Hens Use First Half Outburst To Grab 3-0 Win Over Richmond
9/1/2019 3:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NEWARK, Del. – After a tough loss on Friday night, Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro challenged his University of Delaware women's soccer team to see how they would respond less than 48 hours later when the University of Richmond visited Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
That answer was delivered quickly on a perfect Sunday afternoon for soccer as the Blue Hens scored three times in the first 20 minutes en route to a 3-0 victory over the Spiders. It marked the first time since 2015, a span of 75 games, that Delaware had scored three or more goals in a half.
The 3-1 start to the 2019 season is the best start since 2010 for the Blue Hens.
Delaware got things started in the seventh minute when senior Dani Kabat launched a pass from just outside the box on the defensive side of the field to a sprinting Alexis Montgomery, who made a move and fired home her third goal of the season to give the Blue Hens a 1-0 lead.
Nine minutes later, Montgomery got just inside the box and drew a foul to earn the penalty kick. For the second time this year, Jessica Kennett stepped up and put the PK home to push the advantage to 2-0.
Just over three minutes later, a beautiful sequence of passes led to an absolute rocket from Sara D'Appolonia for her first goal of the season and a 3-0 cushion.
From there, the Delaware defensive unit went to work, holding the Spiders to just three shots over the final 50 minutes of action to pick up the team's third shutout of the season.
What They Said
"Today's game showed us who this team really is. To come off a tough loss and perform how we did, it truly showed us how much grit we have. When you have upperclassmen like Jess Kennett, Alexis Montgomery, and Dani Kabat show up ready to work, it really sets the tone and allows everyone to pick up their energy and put in max effort against a good opponent. I'm proud and can't wait to get back out to training and focus on Villanova." - Associate Head Coach Taylor Wilson
"Coming off a tough loss Friday, we knew we had to respond and step up for the challenge of today's game. It was extremely exciting to see everyone's hard work, grit and willingness to work for each other. The adversity we face, like going down a man, excels the character that we as a team embody and that thrives our work ethic. When we had the chances, we capitalized on them which was the perfect response and I'm so proud to be a part of this team's success." - Senior Alexis Montgomery
