Late Rally Falls Just Short in Blue Hens’ 3-2 Loss to UNCW
9/21/2019 10:10:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NEWARK, Del. – Delaware scored on a UNCW own goal and later had two brilliant chances inside the box but could not score the equalizer as the Blue Hens' rally fell just short in a hard fought 3-2 loss to the Seahawks Saturday night at Grant Stadium.
The first 45 minutes were scoreless, before a highly entertaining second half of soccer. UNCW struck first in the 56th minute when Danny Reynolds scored on a header off a long free kick from Gabriel Cabral, while six minutes later Colton Pleasants took a feed from Jacob Evans and fired a rocket into the top right corner of the goal from 25 yards out to make it a 2-0 game.
Delaware got on the board less than two minutes later when a Blue Hen was taken down in the box, allowing Timo Hummrich to blast a penalty kick into the right corner of the goal. Hummrich's goal was his team-leading fourth of the season, all from the penalty spot.
Reynolds then added his second goal of the night off a free kick, as he blasted a 25-yard free kick into the top right corner of the cage to put the Seahawks in front 3-1 in the 77th minute.
The Blue Hens again pulled within a goal in the 86th minute when Mark Battle sent a cross from the left side into the box, which was headed by UNCW's Mark Lindstrom into his own goal.
Delaware continued to push for the tying goal, but with 2:45 remaining Isak Kristjansson hit the crossbar with a shot before Seahawks goalkeeper Gabriel Perrotta stopped Hummrich on a rebound attempt from point blank range.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"We've been resilient all year, and it was great to see that again tonight. At the end of the game we should have tied it up, but UNCW's keeper made a fantastic save. It's all about conference play for us, so next week's game against Elon is critical. I still maintain that we're on course to pick up a playoff berth. We always want to bring the season down to one last game, and I'm confident with this group that if we stay healthy we can accomplish that."
"I'd also like to thank the Blue Hen fans, we had a fantastic crowd celebrating the nation's only Spanish college soccer broadcast."
