NEWARK, Del. – Delaware twice rallied from a one-goal deficit before Jake Steinberg scored the game-winner as the Blue Hens posted a crucial 3-2 win over Elon Saturday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Delaware moved into a tie for fifth place in the CAA table with five points following its first conference victory of the season.
Elon struck first just over 10 minutes into the contest when Inigo Bronto intercepted a back pass from a Blue Hen defender and beat UD goalkeeper Renan Thomazo to put the Phoenix in front.
The Blue Hens pulled even with 1:08 remaining in the first half as Rex Twum collected a free ball off a cross from Robert Campbell, spun toward the end line and hit a nifty shot off his left foot into the top left corner of the cage for his third goal of the season.
Elon went back ahead in the 57th minute when Matthias Cooper passed to Kasper Lehm, who one-touched a feed to Bronte for a finish from eight yards out.
However Delaware knotted the match at 2-2 just three and a half minutes later as Steinberg lofted a high cross from the left side into the box, where Brandon Sengphachanh beat Phoenix keeper Alex Lorne on a header to finish from eight yards out for his first career goal.
Just over two minutes later Steinberg scored the game-winner, taking a pass from Twum and beating Lorne with a low shot into the right corner of the goal.
The Blue Hens would hang on from there as Thomazo, who finished with seven stops on the night, came up with a couple of huge saves in the final 10 minutes.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"Any points in this conference are huge, so we're thrilled tonight. It wasn't our best performance and I give credit to Elon, they kept us on our heels for a long time and we didn't have the quality we needed. But this group's resilience again showed through and we put three goals on the board, so I'm thrilled we can move up the table with a very important CAA win."
"For Brandon, it was very brave of him to go in on that ball, and we got a little bit of luck on Jake's goal. Plus a little bit of magic with Rex who scored a great individual goal in the first half, so that was enough to get us three points tonight."
Jake Steinberg
"Every conference game, especially when we're home, is important. I'm glad I was able to come off the bench and make a contribution any way I could. On the goal we moved the ball from one side to the other and Rex just found me. I got a little fortunate with the finish, but that's why you shoot the ball so I'm very happy I could contribute tonight. It's massive that we got these points in the conference, and hopefully we can continue that going forward."
