Fall Finale goes the distance
GAME TWO
GAME THREE
NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware baseball program concluded its fall session Friday afternoon as the Black team forced a decisive, abbreviated game three in the Fall World Series, but the Blue squad was able to take the two-inning finale for bragging rights.Â
"I'm just really proud of this group for coming to practice each day with the right attitude, following all of the protocols the University put into place and getting to feel a sense of normalcy for a few hours each week," said 21st-year head coach Jim Sherman. "Our older guys showed the leadership we've come to expect and the younger group got a good taste of how we do things. All-in-all, I'm pleased with what I saw out there and excited about the group we have."
Freshman Brett Lesher had the big hit of the day, a grand slam in the Black team's big fourth inning. Redshirt senior Vinny Vaccone was 2-for-2 with a run in game two and freshman Jarrett Weglarz was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.Â
Senior Derek Wakeley went 4.0 innings for the Black team, scattering five hits and striking out four. Redshirt freshman Evan Harris had a pair of strikeouts in relief and classmate Luke Pizzico shut the door with a pair of punchouts.Â
Redshirt sophomore Tyler Juhl led the charge for the Blue team in game two, going 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs while redshirt freshman Gabe Dermott was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.Â
In an abbreviated and decisive game three, the Blue team jumped out in front and didn't relinquish the lead. Freshmen Jake Dunion and Mitchell Balint each had an RBI for the winners and Vaccone reached and drove in a run in his lone plate appearance for the Black team.Â
That wraps up the Blue Hens' fall session as the team will return in the spring semester.Â
