BOSTON, Mass. – While most of the world was writing and rewriting Valentine's Day cards, the University of Delaware track & field program was busy rewriting the record books.
The Blue Hens took down three school records to highlight their trip to the 2020 David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University. Along with the three new school records, Delaware had three new ECAC qualifiers and 11 top-10 performances in school history at the meet.
"I'm thrilled with how these student-athletes competed this weekend. To have three school records in the same weekend is tremendous," head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith said. "This group continues to have great chemistry and energy, which really carries onto the track and pushes each other to these types of performances. I'm excited to see how we finish up the indoor season."
Leading the record-breaking performances was the DMR of Jessica Stratton (1200), Halima Scott (400), Sydni Stovall (800) and Michaela Meyer (1600), who shattered the old record by 13 seconds, posting a time of 11:30.29. The time is currently a top-25 nationally, ranking 22nd so far during the indoor season.
Scott wasn't done, breaking the school record in the 400m, becoming the first Blue Hen to break 54 seconds by clocking in at 53.97. Meyer also broke her own school record in the 800m, crossing the line in 2:07.07.
The three new ECAC Indoor qualifiers were Abby Bolt in the 5000m (17:18.11), Valerie Romero in the mile (4:58.94) and Susanna Weir in the 3000m (9:51.18). Weir's time is the second-best in school history, while Bolt (fourth all-time) and Romero (ninth all-time) also had top-10 performances.
In addition, Roshelle Leaks (200m – ninth all-time), Trinity Tapper (200m – eighth all-time), Halima Scott (200m – second all-time), Taliah Cintron (400m – 10th all-time) and Jess Harding (800m – sixth all-time) also joined the record books.
