LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Delaware exploded for eight runs in the top of the first inning and hit four homers on the day as the Blue Hens cruised to a 14-1 victory in five innings over Loyola Marymount on Sunday during the final game of the LMU Tournament.
The Blue Hens' four dingers ties the program single game record, which had been accomplished five previous times including last April at Villanova. UD scored its most runs in a game since plating 15 at Delaware State on April 28, 2017, while the margin of victory is its highest since a 15-0 win at Saint Peter's on April 29, 2015.
Delaware, which won three of four games at the tournament, took control early by scoring six runs before making an out. Hanna Garber led off the game with a single, while Brittney Mendoza followed with a two-run homer to leftfield. Karolina Flores then doubled, and following a Lions pitching change, Brooke Glanden singled her home to make it 3-0.
Halle Kisamore followed with a walk before Chayanna Gallardo drilled a three-run homer to left, prompting LMU's second pitching change of the inning. Kailey Christian and Ali Davis then singled, and following the first out of the game, Garber drove home both runners with a single up the middle to put the Blue Hens up eight.
Kisamore doubled and Gallardo singled in the top of the second, before both runners crossed the plate on a two-out single to center by Davis that put UD up double digits.
Gallardo led off the top of the fourth with a double and Christian followed with a two-run shot to left. Christian then added her second two-run homer of the game the following frame to close the Blue Hens' scoring. The Lions avoided the shutout in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Molly Grumbo.
Gallardo finished 3 for 3 at the plate with three RBI, a double and a homer, while Christian was 3 for 4 with two homers and four RBI. Garber, Mendoza and Davis each added two hits and two RBI on the day. Maddi Marsh delivered a complete game effort in the circle to pick up the win as she allowed one run on four hits while striking out four.
