FAIRFAX, Va. – Delaware's late rally fell just short as the Blue Hens dropped a 6-5 verdict to Radford Friday afternoon on the first day of the Patriot Classic.
The Highlanders seized control early with five runs in the bottom of the first inning, capped with a three-run homer by Madison Canady. The Blue Hens got on the board in the top of the third when Brooke Glanden singled home Hanna Garber, but Radford's Hunter Mundy added a longball in the bottom half to make it a 6-1 game.
Chayanna Gallardo belted her second homer of the year in the top of the fourth, before Delaware added three runs in the fifth. Halle Kisamore drove home Brittney Mendoza on a sacrifice fly, while Gallardo doubled home Karolina Flores and Glanden to bring Delaware within one.
The Blue Hens rallied in the seventh when Flores and Glanden both singled with one out, but Highlanders pitcher Jessie Marvin entered the game and retired Kisamore on a line out before striking out Gallardo to end the game.
Glanden finished 3 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored for Delaware, Gallardo was 2 for 4 with three RBI, and Flores added two singles on the day. Kailey Christian replaced Maddi Marsh in the circle during the bottom of the first and went six innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four.
