Meyer Shatters School Record, In Position for Program's First-Ever NCAA Indoor Berth
2/28/2020 4:26:00 PM | Track & Field
BOSTON, Mass. – In a recent feature on UDBlueHens Instagram, Michaela Meyer of the University of Delaware track & field program said that one of her main reasons for coming to Newark was a chance to become her own person, not just half of the Meyer twins, which she grew up always being referred to.
On Friday afternoon in Boston, she did that and then some.
Meyer etched her name in further in the Delaware record books and most likely punched her ticket to become the first Blue Hen in program history to reach the NCAA Indoor National Championship.
"Coach Waite told me in my first meeting my freshman year that he believed I could make it to nationals. I didn't believe him at first, but he kept telling me I could. The last couple years everything has clicked and now everything we talked about in that first meeting is actually happening," Meyer said. "I feel so grateful to the university, the coaches, the trainers, my teammates, and my family for helping me get here."
The Southbury, Conn. native stepped to the track at BU Track & Tennis Center and posted a 2:03.40 in the 800m, nearly four seconds faster than her previous school record of 2:07.70.
"Michaela executed her race perfectly. Her past couple races she had been pressing too much and not running as relaxed and smooth as she needed. She made those corrections today and we saw the results we were hoping for," assistant track & field coach Ryan Waite said.
"The goal today was to come through 600 meters as fast as she has been in her other races this year, but to do it feeling more relaxed. That would allow her to have a much stronger finish on the final lap. To prepare for that, we did a workout this Monday where she ran the first part of each interval smooth and relaxed and then she would change gears and close hard the last 200 meters," Waite added. "Today she came through 600 meters relaxed, and I yelled to her, 'Just like the workout Monday. Finish hard and you're going to nationals.' She gave it everything she had and punched her ticket to Albuquerque!"
All indoor competitions will wrap up Sunday afternoon with final declarations for the NCAA Indoor Championships happening during the middle of next week.
