FAIRFAX, Va. – Delaware defeated Lafayette, 9-1 in five innings, and host George Mason, 4-2, as the Blue Hens concluded action at the Patriot Classic with two wins on Sunday afternoon.
Delaware wasted little time in taking the lead during its opening game of the day as Hanna Garber led off the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second and scored on an RBI double by Brittney Mendoza. One out later Brooke Glanden drove home Mendoza on a groundout to give the Blue Hens an early 2-0 advantage.
The Leopards got on the board in the top of the third when Julia Romano delivered an RBI double, but Mendoza drove home Sarah Bessel with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half before Garber scored on a Lafayette error in the fourth to make it a 4-1 game.
Karolina Flores doubled home two runs in the bottom of the fifth, and after Chayanna Gallardo belted a two-run double of her own, Halle Kisamore drove home Gallardo on a sacrifice fly to end the game due to the mercy rule.
Mendoza finished with two hits and two RBI during the win, while five Blue Hens added a hit apiece. Sarah Piening improved to 5-0 with a complete game effort in the circle, allowing just one unearned run on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
Delaware and George Mason were locked in a pitchers' duel, as neither team could dent the scoreboard until the Blue Hens scored all four of their runs in the top of the sixth.
Garber led off the inning with a triple, before Mendoza cracked her third homer of the year down the leftfield line to put UD in front. One out later Glanden singled and Gallardo doubled, before both runners crossed the plate on a two-run triple by Kisamore.
Meanwhile Blue Hen freshman Emily Winburn did not allow a hit through the first five innings, before the Patriots got on the board in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Meghan Graham. George Mason added a run in the seventh on a double steal, before Winburn got Haley Taormina to ground out to end the game.
Winburn allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and zero walks. Garber and Mendoza each finished 2 for 4 at the plate to pace the Blue Hen attack.
