Blue Hens Open Pirate Invitational With 7-2 Victory Over Saint Peter’s

HAMPTON, Va. – A big third inning rally put the Blue Hens in front for good and Delaware went on to defeat Saint Peter's, 7-2, Friday afternoon on the first day of the Pirate Invitational.

The Peacocks took the early lead in the top of the first inning as Anja Solveig Kane led off with a double and scored one out later on an RBI single by Cara McNulty.

After failing to score during its first two at bats, Delaware took control by scoring five times in the bottom of the third. After the first two Blue Hens were retired, Hanna Garber singled and Brittney Mendoza walked before Karolina Flores drilled a two-run double to put Delaware in front.

After Brooke Glanden walked, Chayanna Gallardo delivered an RBI single to chase home Flores and make it a 3-1 game. Halle Kisamore was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, before Kailey Christian ripped a two-run single up the middle to cap the rally.

Sarah Bessel legged out a bunt single to open the bottom of the fourth and one out later Mendoza cracked a two-run homer to rightcenter, her team-leading fourth longball of the year, to put the Blue Hens up six.

Saint Peter's got a run back in the top of the sixth on a run-scoring single by Alyssa Mido, but would not get closer.

Maddi Marsh improved to 5-1 on the year after allowing one run on three hits in five innings of relief, after Sarah Piening was charged with one run in the opening two frames.

Glanden, Gallardo and Bessel each finished with two hits on the afternoon while Mendoza, Flores and Christian all drove in a pair.

Due to a lengthy rain delay earlier in the day, Delaware's second game scheduled for Friday vs. Hampton has been moved to Sunday at 2 p.m.
