Pitchers Dominate as Blue Hens Shut Out UMBC, Norfolk State at Pirate Invitational

NORFOLK, Va. – Blue Hen pitchers Emily Winburn and Kailey Christian each tossed complete game shutouts as Delaware defeated UMBC, 1-0, and Norfolk State, 3-0, Saturday on the second day of the Pirate Invitational.
In the Blue Hens' first game of the day, Delaware and UMBC remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning. It appeared the contest was headed to extra innings after the first two Blue Hens were retired, but Katie Stahre tripled down the rightfield line and scored when Ali Davis grounded a single to left.
Winburn was fantastic in the circle, scattering four hits and not walking a batter while striking out four to post the first shutout of her Blue Hen career.
Delaware wasted little time in taking the lead during the nightcap, as Hanna Garber led off the game with a triple and crossed the plate when Brittney Mendoza followed with a single to right.
After Davis singled and Sarah Bessel reached on an error in the third, Mendoza drilled a two-run double down the leftfield line to put the Blue Hens up three.
That would be plenty of support for Christian, who allowed five hits and struck out 10 batters to record her first shutout as a Blue Hen. The Spartans brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh following a double and a single, but Christian retired the final batter on a flyout to center as Delaware extended its winning streak to five.
