NORFOLK, Va. – For the second straight day Delaware used dominant pitching to pick up a pair of wins, as the Blue Hens swept the Pirate Invitational by defeating Binghamton, 2-1, and Hampton, 8-2 in eight innings, on Sunday.
In Delaware's first game of the day, the Bearcats scored a run in the top of the first inning as Marissa Braito led off with a single and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Makayla Alvarez.
The Blue Hens scored both of their runs in the top of the fourth, as Halle Kisamore crossed the plate when Katie Stahre reached on an error and Kailey Christian then raced home on a wild pitch.
Maddi Marsh allowed one run on four hits and struck out three during the first three innings in the circle, while Emily Winburn earned the victory after giving up just two hits and striking out five in four scoreless frames of relief.
The Blue Hens then traveled from Norfolk to Hampton, and took the lead over the Pirates in the top of the fourth when Brooke Glanden belted a solo homer. Kailey Christian then doubled home Kisamore in the sixth to give Delaware a 2-0 lead.
Hampton tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double by Lexi Lomax, but Winburn took over in the circle and escaped the jam before Delaware exploded for six runs in the eighth.
Kisamore singled home Grace Beyer to start the rally, while Stahre added a two-run single to make it a 5-2 game. Ali Davis followed with an RBI single, before Hanna Garber capped the outburst by delivering a two-run double.
Glanden finished 4 for 4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored, while Christian and Sarah Bessel each added two hits. Winburn picked up her second win of the day after tossing 1.2 scoreless frames, after Christian was charged with two runs while striking out 10 batters for the second consecutive day in 6.1 innings of work.
Delaware, which won 10 straight games earlier in the season, has now won seven in a row. The Blue Hens open their home schedule next weekend with 12 noon doubleheaders against Coppin State and Rider.
