Juhl has a big day at the plate and Greenly was dominant in relief
NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware baseball team took down Rider in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon to complete its first sweep of the season by 8-6 and 7-6 finals at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Â
"I'm proud of our guys for taking care of business at home," said head coach Jim Sherman. "There are still things to clean up, but we had some guys come through in big moments and these guys deserve this sweep."
Â
Game One
The Broncs came out strong and plated two runs in the first inning before Delaware responded with a three-run second inning behind RBI singles by sophomore Tyler Juhl and junior Jordan Hutchins.
Â
In the top of the second, Rider loaded the bases with two outs and sophomore Joey Silan was able to strand them before the Blue Hens' big inning.
Â
Juhl was 3-for-3 in the game with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored and would drive in another crucial run to tie the game in the sixth inning of a seven-inning contest.
Â
Freshman Aidan Riley followed with a base hit through the right side to extend the Blue Hens' lead and Hutchins drove home another with a base hit to left to score Juhl.
Â
Riley was 3-for-4 with a two RBIs in his first time batting out of the lead-off spot in the order.
Â
Hutchins was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and senior Derek Wakeley entered the game in the fifth inning and allowed just one hit and an unearned run with a strikeout in his 2.1 innings of work to earn the win.
Â
Game Two
Freshman Bryce Greenly stole the show in the series finale, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts.
Â
Again, Rider struck first with one run in the first inning before the Blue Hens exploded for five in the home half of the first. Sophomore Austin Colmery had the big hit in the inning, a two-out double to left center to clear the loaded bases.
Â
Freshman Luke Pizzico was called upon early out of the bullpen and did his part, tossing 3.1 innings with two runs on just two hits and a pair of strikeouts.
Â
The Broncs would however come charging back with a four-run fifth inning to tie the game before Juhl drove in his third RBI of the afternoon to give the Blue Hens the lead back on a double to left center to score senior Vinny Vaccone.
Â
Greenly was absolutely lights out, entering the game in the fifth inning and had two 1-2-3 innings while striking out five straight batters at one point.
Â
Sophomore Zach Lesher gave some insurance in the eighth with a pinch-hit double to left field that would score Juhl.
Â
Sophomores Joseph Carpenter and Colmery each had multi-hit games as Carpenter was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Colmery was 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Vaccone was just 1-for-4 but scored three runs and swiped three bases.
