NEWARK, Del. – Delaware attempted to rally back from a 17-point second half deficit but could not get over the hump as the Blue Hens fell to the College of Charleston, 66-59, Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware, which split the CAA-opening weekend following Saturday's 70-67 win over the Cougars, shot 52.6 percent in the first half but connected on just a 31.8 percent clip in the second. The Blue Hens trailed 33-28 at the break, but scored just four points during the first nine minutes of the second half as the Cougars extended the margin to 49-32.
UD rallied to score the next 13, points, pulling within 49-45 on two Johnny McCoy free throws at the 7:49 mark. It was still just a five-point game at 54-49 following a Ryan Allen layup with 4:09 to play, but the Cougars scored the next five points and held on from there.
Allen paced the Blue Hens with 17 points, becoming the 13th player in program history to reach the 1,300-point plateau, while Dylan Painter added 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Ebby Asamoah and Gianmarco Arletti each contributed seven points for Delaware, which used a seven-man rotation due to injuries to Kevin Anderson and Aleks Novakovich.
Payton Willis led the Cougars with 17 points while Zep Jasper added 13 for Charleston, which never trailed during the contest.
Martin Ingelsby
"The final score wasn't what we wanted, but I'm proud of our guys and how they competed. We struggled early in the second half, but we have a fearless group that rallied to put pressure on them. We got some good looks late in the game, but just couldn't make it a one-possession game. Our team got better this weekend, now we have to get back to practice and keep improving."
