Team Efforts Lifts Women’s Soccer Past Towson, 2-1

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware (5-8-2, 2-2-2 CAA) and Towson (7-6-3, 2-4-1) provided a Thursday night lights soccer match that had fans from both sides actively engaged from start to finish. With neither team willing to give an inch to the other, it all came down to the Blue Hens mustering out a game-winning goal in the second half to earn the victory at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
"It's great to get a win. This team has been through so much over the last three months since the season started. I'm really proud of them," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "We have a lot of injuries that we are overcoming, so to be able to put together the performances that this group is putting together is really a credit and testament to their character. At some point, you want to see things go their way because of how hard they are working."
The visiting Tigers struck first when they were able to scoot the ball past the Delaware defense to take a 1-0 edge in the 27th minute.
Two minutes later, Anna Diffendal slid the ball up the middle and into Towson territory. It landed perfectly in Raychel Speicher's path, as she drew the goalie out of the goal and kicked the ball to the left side of the net to tie the match at 1-1 in the 29th minute with her first goal of the season.
Lauren Elwell positioned the ball right in front of the net off a free-kick, and it landed at the foot of Kate Henesy, who gave it a soft tap right into the goal for her first score of the season.
The Tigers continued to attack the Blue Hen defense down to the final second, as they registered 14 shots tonight against the Blue Hens with 10 coming in the second half. Towson held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks but was unable to capitalize. Towson's Nia Christopher entered the match as the second-leading scorer in the CAA this season. The Blue Hens held Christopher to three shots and one on goal.
Lauren Krinsky became the 14th player in UD women's soccer history to record 100 career saves. Krinsky finished the night with a trio of saves. Tonight was the third time this season that Delaware recorded two goals in a victory at home.
"Tonight in the first half we played some of the best soccer we've played all season," Barroqueiro said. "This is one of the most dangerous teams offensively in our conference. I think we held them to one of their lower shot totals this season. Towson has some incredible attacking players and to be able to hold them individually to low shot totals is really good. We talked about defense being a team effort and this was the epitome of that. The girls took the game plan and executed it to a T."
Next up for the Blue Hens in CAA play is a road match at UNCW on Sunday, Oct. 24. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
