BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Delaware track and field team traveled to Boston, Mass. on Saturday to open the 2021-22 season at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University inside Track & Tennis Center. The Blue Hens shined in the 800m and 5000m events by rewriting the school history books in the lone indoor meet of the 2021 calendar year.
"Before the races we talked about how today was a celebration of our cross country fitness," said head coach Ryan Waite. "Cross country is a lot of fun but time means very little because of the differences from course to course, so sometimes it's hard to know how fit you really are. Whereas the track is the gold standard and you can get a much better indicator of where you're at. Turns out they're pretty fit, and we were able to celebrate that tonight. Proud of them and excited to see what they accomplish the rest of this year."
Jessica Harding was the lone Blue Hen competing in the 800m, where she opened with a time of 2:12.14 for third-place. The mark moved Harding into fifth place in school history in the event, passing Lindsay Prettyman's 2013 mark (2:13.75).
Tina Capparell carried over her cross country dominance to the track as she led the way for the Blue Hens by setting a new school record time of 16:38.60, which was good enough for 38th place in the 5000m event. Capparell eclipsed a 36-year old previous time of 17:03.28 set by former Blue Hen Kim Mitchell in 1985. Susanna Weir followed behind Capparell with a time of 16:49.62 (43rd place), which placed her second in school history. Hannah Lindgren also put her name in the record books after finishing with a time of 17:09.90 (50th place) to sit in fifth in program history. Julien Webster crossed the 5000m finish line in a time of 17:17.74 (52nd place), which moved her into seventh place in school history.
