STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The University of Delaware track and field team opened the 2022 calendar year in dominant fashion at the MLK Day Invitational hosted by St. John's University inside Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. The Blue Hens put together nine first-place finishes, headlined by outstanding performances by Chioma Njoku, Tina Capparell and Kosie Nkwonta.
"The coaching staff felt good about how today went. For the vast majority of the team, this was their first indoor meet of the season and for some, it was their first indoor meet in two years. Where we are in the context of the season and in our training, this was a good start," said head coach Ryan Waite.
To capture a first-place finish, Njoku shattered her own school record in the weight throw with a toss of 18.73m (61' 5.5"). She beat her previous mark of 18.35m (60' 2.5") set on Feb. 27, 2021.
Waite stated, "Chioma's school record in the weight throw was definitely the highlight. It was especially great because the rest of the team had completed competition when the weight was taking place, so we were all there to see it and cheer for her."
In the mile run event, Capparell became the ninth-fastest performer in school history after earning first place with a personal-best time of 4:58.64. Nkwonta's fourth-place finish in the shot put (13.09m (42' 11.5")) placed her name in the record books earning the ninth slot.
