EMMITSBURG, Md. – Despite a career high 17 saves by senior goalie Matt Kilkeary, Delaware men's lacrosse fell at Mount St. Mary's, 10-7, Wednesday afternoon.
In his first career start, Kilkeary stopped 17 of 27 shots, the most since Matt DeLuca made 19 against the Mount a year ago (Feb. 8, 2020).
Senior captain Mark Bieda and freshman JP Ward led the Hens with two goals apiece.
The Mount was paced by three players with two scores.
In his debut, JP Ward wrapped around the net and buried a shot low to start the scoring for both teams. The Mount answered with six-straight goals and seven of the next eight to take a 7-2 lead into the break.
The two teams traded goals to start the third before the Blue Hens knocked in three-straight, capped by Nick Jessen's first goal in the Blue and Gold. Delaware stood within three of Mount St. Mary's, 9-6, at the 11:15 mark of the fourth quarter.
After the Mount pushed the lead to 10-6 a minute later, Bieda went 1-1 from behind the net to pull the Hens within three again. Delaware couldn't convert over the final 3:31, dropping its first contest of the year.
The Blue Hens head to NJIT Saturday. Time is still to be determined.
